THE EDITOR, Sir:I WRITE to highlight the high-handed manner in which the Ministry of National Security has acted concerning the Morgan's Bridge Police Station located in Grange Hill, Westmoreland.
The ministry (tenants of premises housing the station), since June 1995, has not paid a cent in rental, effectively squatting on private property.
It has for the past 20 years ignored periodic requests for increased rental and also it has ignored quit notices served by the courts to give up possession of the building.
At present the occupants are in the process of being moved to a new location. However, the building being vacated is in an unacceptably deplorable condition and the Security Ministry is refusing to either compensate the owners for damage done to the building or to pay the accumulated rental owed.
All of this while the ministry is spending, under the Police Station Rehabilitation Programme, hundreds of millions of dollars on the refurbishing and construction of stations all over the island.
I am using this medium to express my deep disgust at this blatant abuse of power by this government ministry, which has no respect for the rights of the citizen of this country and is behaving in a dictatorial manner, seemingly answerable to no-one and being above the law.
I am, etc.,
