Major traffic changes for Santa Cruz today
published: Tuesday | December 24, 2002

By Rayon Dyer, Freelance Writer

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

THE ST. Elizabeth police have announced a major traffic change for the town of Santa Cruz, and several security measures for that town and Black River, come today.

Supt. Herman 'Chucky' Brown, head of the St. Eli-zabeth Police Division, told The Gleaner yesterday that the traffic change and security measures are aimed at maintaining order in the areas during the Christmas holidays. Supt. Brown said he was appealing to everyone to be cautious during the busy period.

Starting today, motorists who do not plan to do business on Main Street, Santa Cruz, will be asked to use the bypass rather than go through the town. The police will be out in their numbers to enforce this new traffic change, especially during the Christmas season, Supt. Brown said. "The traffic congestion problem in that town has reached crisis proportion and we had to do something to try and ease it."

Also, persons who sell goods on High Street, Black River, will be asked to find selling space by the market area. Supt. Brown said that several business people in the town have been complaining to the police about the inconvenience they have been experiencing with persons who were blocking the entrances of their premises to sell their wares.

"Plainclothes policemen will be placed all over these major towns to maintain law and order," Supt. Brown said. He advised that business people especially should be careful how they approach their homes at night.
