AUBREY WOLLASTON ticked off a fine century to put Melbourne in a commanding position against Police in their Surrey Senior Cup game at Melbourne Oval yesterday as the hunt for semi-final places in the National Cricket Championship intensified.
Also scoring centuries were Boys' Town's Marlon Keating (106) against Portland and Kingston's Ricardo Powell (111) against Tivoli, both Surrey Senior Cup games.
On a day when Carlton Baugh Jr (57) and Llewelyn Meggs (61 not out) also got among the runs with half centuries, Melbourne posted 309 for six declared of 64 overs; and the close of yesterday's first day had Police struggling at 83 for four off 35 overs.
Wollaston, who faced the day's first ball, hit 110 from 112 balls spiced with 16 boundaries and on his way to his ton featured in two good partnerships which put the Kangaroos in control.
Wollaston shared in an opening partnership of 69 with Dillon Ebanks (17) and afterwards put on 104 for the fourth wicket with Baugh, whose 57 from 48 balls included two fours and two hugh sixes.
With the bowlers struggling on a hot day, the declaration came at tea at which stage paceman Rohan Belite had four victims for 80 runs. Among Belite's victim was Wollaston, who was caught and bowled with the score at 200 for five.
Police got off to a disastrous start and will resume their innings this morning with Marvin James (seven) and Richard McIntosh (11) at the crease.
Pacer Leon Bent claimed opener Demetrus Francis for 33 and Dwayne Crossgill (13) to be Melbourne's most successful bowler with two for 33.
