Spanish Town seek to atone for Cup loss

By Nodley Wright, Staff Reporter

THE DARLINGS of Spanish Town, Spanish Town Comprehensive, will be seeking to shrug off the disappointment of losing the Manning Cup with a win today in the semi-finals of the Walker Cup Knockout football competition at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

Today they take on defending Manning Cup champions Norman Manley in the opening game of the doubleheader at 12:30. In the feature game at 2:30, current Manning Cup champions Bridgeport Comprehensive go up against Wolmer's.

After delighting throughout the season with their exciting brand of open football led by captain Ravi Bonnick, Alton Brown and Valentine Gardner, Spanish Town promised much going into the Manning Cup final. In the

semi-finals they showed great character by coming from two goals down to stop former champions Charlie Smith 4-2.

Today they go up against Norman Manley who must have been stung by their exit from the Manning Cup competition after losing just one match - a crucial one.

In players such as Weston Forrest, Courtney Williams, Kevin Mills and Adonijah Cameron, they have the quality to take the action to the very skilled Spanish Town. The tough-tackling Norman Manley will have to contend with the return of Spanish Town strongman Lister Warren.

Despite the presence of Forrest and Cameron, Norman Manley's biggest asset is goalkeeper Andrew Gibson.

Bridgeport should start favourites against Wolmer's. Kemar Peterkin and Dean Thompson are the best strike pair in Corporate Area schoolboy football and they should cause problems for the Wolmer's defence. Goalkeeper Maurice Evans is also a class act.

For Wolmer's, midfielder Akiem Priestly, Luton Shelton, Howard Wong and captain Damani Thomas are the keys. With Bridgeport in the mood that they are in, the task should be tough for Wolmer's.

TODAY'S GAMES

Spanish Town Comp. vs Norman Manley at 12:30.

Bridgeport vs Wolmer's at 2:30.
