THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN THE face of all the criticism and lack of faith in the Police Force and other civil services in Jamaica a good story has unfolded and I feel the need to share it with Jamaica.
On Thursday morning November 15 at approximately 4 am an electrical fire was ignited at the office of Bearings & Accessories Ltd at 83 Harbour Street. Patrolling Inspector Steve Malcolm and Corporal D. Reid on their routine patrol of the area noticed smoke coming from the roof of the building and immediately alerted the York Park Fire Department.
This fire had not yet become an inferno and could very easily have been missed had these officers not been alert and on the ball in doing their job. This I know because of the eventual damage, the fire could have become a lot worse before it was obvious that the building was ablaze.
To Inspector Steve Malcolm and Corporal D. Reid, the management and staff of Bearings & Accessories Ltd express our utmost gratitude for their efforts in handling this situation which without their intervention would have resulted in devastation if not complete destruction to the building.
As for the York Park Fire Station (Orange Street) under District Officer Warren Malcolm their performance was nothing short of par excellence. Their effort to enter the locked building was determined and purposeful as they had to cut grills and break glass to gain access to the third floor on the building where the fire had originated and was still confined.
We often hear of stories where the building could have been saved but for the fire rescue teams inability to gain access to the building, well thank God and thanks to these brave and caring men that was not the case, they were able to put out the fire quickly and prevent the building from being destroyed and then stood guard until we arrived.
I am, etc.,
