Looters rob flood victims

Stalled motorist gets a push.

THE PLIGHT of flood-hit householders and motorists was made much worse yesterday by criminal elements, who seized the opportunity to loot.

Stalled motorists were robbed and a number of businesses, including some in Nanse Pen were looted. Several robberies were reported in the Washington Gardens community. The police were kept busy as flooded streets swarmed with inner-city residents, anxious to get their hands on hapless motorists who suffered the misfortune of breaking down. Others had to pay their way to be guided through flood waters.

"Is US$50 mi get from da man dey," one young man boasted to his friend. He hails from the White Wing community, near Three Miles, the scene of numerous stalled cars.

The flood waters rose to about four feet on some major roadways. A number of motorists developed mechanical problems and got trapped along the way. Some were robbed by persons offering assistance, while others had to pay for help to get their vehicles to safer ground.

Shortly after mid-day heavily armed members of the security forces were observed maintaining a presence in the 2-mile area of Spanish Town Road after reports that motorists were being robbed.

Sections of Spanish Town Road, Marcus Garvey, Mandela High-way were impassable at one stage. Other thoroughfares affected included sections of Constant Spring Road, Half-Way Tree, Weymouth Drive, Washington Boulevard and adjoining roads.

One of several companies on Weymouth Close, off Weymouth Drive was looted by scores of persons. A Gleaner news team observed women, men and children running with packages in their hands.

"A baby tings in a dem," shouted one woman.
