Ja clip T&T to take title

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC:

JAMAICA WON the BWIA Caribbean Full Bore Rifle Shooting championship at the weekend, narrowly topping hosts Trinidad and Tobago on the final day.

Jamaica, winning their first title since 1995, gathered 1,147 points, one ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (1,146), with defending champions Guyana third on 1,140 points at the Tucker Valley Range.

Ronald Brown, who collected the tournament's top shooter award, led the Jamaicans with a perfect 150 at 300, 500 and 600 yards, as they wiped off a 10-point lead the hosts T&T had entering the final day.

Brown said his team kept their nerves under pressure for the victory.

"We were more relaxed than the other players. We did not panic - entering the final day behind - and just thought of shooting as well as we could," Brown said.

T&T captain Norris Gomez and Oscar Waldron shot good scores of 147 and 146, but Brown's brilliant effort, supported by teammates Keith Hammond (148) and Carl Smith (145) ensured a Jamaican win.

Barbados, behind a strong 148-shoot by Karl Branch on the final day, placed fourth with 1,102 points, with Bermuda (1,081) fifth.
