McLean impresses in SA

McLean

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, CMC :

WEST INDIAN fast bowler Nixon McLean made an impressive debut for KwaZulu-Natal with a ten-wicket haul but his side lost by 28 runs to Northerns in Pool B of the SuperSport Series on Monday.

In a low-scoring four-day match at Kingsmead in Durban, McLean captured five for 32 in 16.4 as Northerns rallied from 41 for seven to 106 in their first innings.

KwaZulu-Natal were then bowled out for 144 - a first innings lead of 38 runs - with South African international Steve Elworthy taking six for 45.

Even though McLean got among the wickets again with five for 66 off 19 overs in Northerns' second innings total of 174, man-of-the-match Elworthy had the final say.

Elworthy grabbed four for 47 as KwaZulu-Natal, set 137 for victory, were routed for 108.

At the New Wanderers Stadium, Franklyn Rose's Gauteng went under to Western Province by an innings and 81 runs.

Rose made 10 and 39, which included five fours and two sixes in Gauteng's totals of 230 and 136 but took a solitary wicket for 68 runs in 26 overs as Western Province amassed 447 in their only innings.

Barbadian pace bowler Vasbert Drakes grabbed five first innings wickets for Border, who drew their second round SuperSport Series match against Free State at Buffalo Park on Monday.

Drakes took five for 25 off 16.2 overs in Free State's first innings total of 207, counting former West Indies' captain Jimmy Adams among his victims for 19.

In reply, Border were routed for 158 and Free State piled on the pressure by making 382 for two wickets before their new captain Adams declared his team's second innings. Drakes was wicketless in 26 overs, which cost 65 runs.

Set a daunting 432 for victory, Border reached 272 for three in 107 overs to earn a draw.
