BRISBANE, CMC:
JAMAICA SECURED silver medals at the Goodwill Games yesterday through sprinter Chris Williams and long jumper James Beckford.
Williams, a silver medallist at the World Championships in Edmonton last month, clocked 20.38 seconds for second spot in the men's 200 metres behind American Shawn Crawford (20.17).
Cuba's Olympic and World Champion Ivan Pedrosa landed the men's long jump at 8.16 metres, with Beckford second at 8.07 metres.
In the men's 200 metres, Crawford, the world indoor champion, ran a strong race out of lane eight and powered down the stretch to hold of Jamaica's national champion Williams, who is the grand prix series leader in the event.
Crawford's time of 20.17 seconds was his season's best, and his teammate Joshua Johnson was third in 20.54 seconds.
Pedrosa, who secured a fourth consecutive world championship gold medal in Edmonton last month, was a clear winner in the men's long jump over Beckford, the 1996 Olympic silver medallist.
The ninth day of competition produced one world record when Olimpiada Ivanova of Russia took the women's 20-kilometre walk in one hour 26 minutes 52.3 seconds, beating teammate Yelena Nikolayeva 1:27:49.3 and Spain's Eva Perez (1:32:22.4).
