St Mary Credit Union grants more scholarships

PORT MARIA, St. Mary:

AS A token of its commitment to education, the St. Mary Credit Union has awarded the second batch of five-year scholarships to five students who did exceptionally well in the GSAT exams.

The students were presented with certificates at a ceremony on September 4 at the credit union office in Port Maria.

Two boys were among the awardees who were placed first and second, having secured the highest GSAT average.

Kristoffe Khouri who attended Highgate All-Age School got a 95 per cent pass in Mathematics, Science 95 per cent, Social Studies 96 per cent, Language 100 per cent and Communica-tion Task 83 per cent. He is now attending St. Jago High School.

Christopher Russel who placed second is now attending St. Mary High School. He is a past student of Guy's Hill All-Age School.

Another student from Guy's Hill Primary, Patrian Francis also produced excellent work during the year. She is now at St. Mary High School.

The second past student from Highgate All-Age School, Tajra Kay Mason, placed first in her class of 49 students. She now attends Marymount High School. The student who attended Oracabessa Primary School, Anita Fannel, averaged 84 per cent. She now attends St. Hilda's High School.

General manager of the SMCU, Garrick Hermitt, said the scholarships totalled $250,000 which would be disbursed over the five years to cover school fees and books.

The criteria for continuation in the programme is a B+ grade average.

The students and their parents are regular savers in the credit union, Mr. Hermitt said.
