de Oliveira fired

de Oliveira

JAMAICA'S ORIENT Express campaign to football's 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea fell off the tracks in the Honduras on Wednesday night and the first reported casualty was technical director Clovis de Oliveira.

The affable Brazilian was fired after Jamaica's 1-0, Cup campaign ending loss in Tegucigalpa and was sent on his way back to his homeland.

The Reggae Boyz, with eight points, still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the World Cup but it would take a miracle for the islanders to advance. With two games remaining, Costa Rica are through with 19 points, the Hondurans have 14 and Mexico and the United States 13.

"With the loss of this game we would not have qualified for the 2002 World Cup," Jamaica Football Federation president Captain Horace Burrell said after the 1-0 loss to Honduras. "We felt that this was the best time (to fire de Oliveira)."
