- Junior Dowie Kensington's Samuel Douglas drives through the off side during his innings of 60 at Kensington Park yesterday in the Jamaica Cricket Association's one-day competition. Wicketkeeper Gary Graham looks on.
MANCHESTER surprised Kensington by 35 runs at Kensington Oval yesterday, to book a place in the Jamaica Cricket Association's one-day Cricket Championship final for the first time.
Their opponents in this weekend's final, to be contested at Up Park Camp , will be the homesters and first time finalists, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). JDF scored an 80-run win over Lucas in their semi-final match at Up Park Camp.
AT KENSINGTON PARK: Scores: Manchester 165 from 43.3 overs; Kensington 130 off 39.3 overs.
Electing to bat, Manchester lost Howard Jamieson (5), Lonstot Warren (13), Gary Graham (7) and were reeling at 56 for three at one stage. Homlwood Headley Cup schoolboy Chacon Chambers (45) and Corey Phillips (40 not out) added 50 runs for the fourth wicket before Chambers lost his wicket to Carlton Moore at 106 for five.
With the introduction of former West Indies Under-15 player Howard Powell and former Jamaica youth player Kevin Peart the visitors lost wickets regularly and were bowled out just before the lunch break.
Powell took three for 23 from 6.3 overs, Peart two for 30 off 10 and Marcus Stewart two for 36 from six.
When Kensington replied, they were in early trouble after losing their two most experienced players. Moore was bowled by Damion Morgan for nought without a run on the board. Six runs later the in-form Maurice Kepple was caught off Morgan's bowling for five as the home slipped to six for two. Schoolboy Morgan continued to turn on the heat as the Kensington batsmen found runs hard to get.
Only Samuel Douglas 60 and Jamaica Under-19 wicketkeeper Junior Stewart 21 offered any resistance. Morgan ended with four for 27 from 10 overs Aden Frew three for 29.
AT UP PARK CAMP: Scores: JDF 266 from 49.1 overs; Lucas 186 off 41.4 overs.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, JDF got their good total through Marlon Kennedy 81, Anthony Fokles 53, National player Wayne Cuff 23, Steve Wallace 27 and Howard Coopeland 18 scored most runs for the soldiers. Bowling for Lucas, Delroy Morgan took two for 31 from 10 overs, Ian Dewar two for 54 from six, Omar Burke two for 50 off 10 and Howard Hamilton two for 70 off eight.
When Lucas replied they found the bowling of Paul Brown and Warren Medwinter hard to cope with and in the end fell short of the total by 80 runs. Oniel Powell 35, Kevin Riley 34, Burke 23 not out, Dewar 14, Andre Coley 13 and Wayne Gayle were the only batsmen to get into double figures. Brown took three for 20 from 10 overs, Medwinter three for 36 off nine and Mark Gray two for 22 from 5.4.
