Dear counsellor: I think I am pregnant

Dear Counsellor:

I am having a very serious problem. I just graduated from high school in Kingston and am awaiting my CXC results. I, however, think I am pregnant, and by the way, I am a Christian.

I am so very afraid and I am not sure what to do. If my parents find out they are going to kill me, especially my dad. If I am pregnant, how should I go about an abortion. What should I do?

Going Crazy

Dear Friend:

The first thing you should do if you suspect you are pregnant is to confirm same with a doctor. Having done that, the next step is to advise your parents, if indeed you are. If you are afraid of confronting your parents, which your letter suggests, I would advise that you approach someone close to them who could accompany you in telling them. However, they should know.

Do not consider aborting the child, this is highly complicated and can be dangerous. If you are pregnant there are other options to consider. You could have your child, then give it up for adoption if you are unable to take care of it, or you may opt to take care of it yourself. This should be discussed with your parents or Counsellor, in order to make the best decision for you. If indeed you are pregnant, I would suggest you contact the women's crisis center on Trafalgar Road, as they will be able to assist you in viewing your other options. I do hope you are not pregnant; however, if you are, it is not the end of the road, others have travelled this road and end up being successful.

All the best.

Counsellor
