21 chosen for Miss Jamaica World 2001

By David Dunkley, Staff Reporter

The 21 finalists who were chosen on Sunday night for the Miss Jamaica World contest in September. - Winston Sill

Tradition was broken on Sunday night, instead of sashing 20 contestants to vie for the title of Miss Jamaica World in September, 21 gorgeous and beautiful ladies were sashed.

The 21 ladies were sashed after 15 were chosen from a field of 44 ladies and were added to six others who were automatic qualifiers from the County competitions. Emcees for the evening, Judith Bodley and Paula-ann Porter explained to the mainly female audience that the girls were just too beautiful so the judges ended up picking 21.

The ladies were indeed beautiful. There were cheers and applause as the 44 strutted their stuff in bathing suits at the Hilton Hotel pool side. At times it seemed that even the audience was confused about which girl they wanted to cheer.

At the end of the over two hour event the 21 ladies sashed were:

Stacy Alvaranga, Miss Interlink Communications; Regina Beavers, Miss Matrix Group; Stacy Belnavis, Miss Singer; Alana Broderick, Miss Fontana Pharmacy; Gail-Ann Brown, Miss Jamrock Sports Bar and Grill; Gayle Davis, Miss Avedon; Tanya Gray, Miss Lube Express; Marie Holman, Miss Quest Audio; Nicole Lannigan, Miss Wilderness Resorts; Shannon Lescene, Miss Decor Gallery; Kalli McDonnough, Miss Empire Supermarket; Michelle McNaught, Miss Guardian Insurance Brokers; Kristin Metz, Miss A.S.A.P Signs; Lutitia Myers, Miss Intec Research; Susan Neil, Miss Karren Car Rentals; Tamara Pinnock, Miss Jamaica Grandiosa Resort; Nordia Roache, Miss Jamaica Lottery Company; Lois Senior, Miss Kingston Hireage; Annette Chang, Miss Dollardaze; Analeise Ulett, Miss Telstar Cable; Melissa Warner, Miss Stitch Stuff.

The eliminations began shortly after 7 p.m. with the 44 contestants parading around the pool in their swimsuits. As the judges made their calculations and the 21 finalists were being chosen, Mark McDonald, Junior Mr Jamaica 2000, had the ladies breathing heavily as he "excited" them with his well toned, muscular body.

He exited and made way for the singing group, To Everything Beautiful (TO ISIS).

The group thrilled the audience with songs like John Holt's Tonight and Happy Go Lucky Girl; Alton Ellis' Girl I Got A Date; Bob Marley's Turn Your Lights Down Low and Third World's Now That We Found Love.

The contestants will face off in a grand coronation show on September 1, 2001 for the title of Miss Jamaica World. The winner will then go on to represent Jamaica in the Miss World Beauty Pageant.

Miss Jamaica World will receive, among other things, a Peugeot motor car, $70,000, shoes from the Shoe Gallery and will be an Ambassador at Large for Jamaica.
