COUNCILLORS OF the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation have condemned the tide of violence sweeping the inner-city communities of West Kingston and called for peace in the affected areas.
In a meeting at the Jamaica Conference Centre on Tuesday, which opened with the song Let There Be Peace On Earth, Councillors expressed sympathies to colleague Patrick Tucker of the Admiral Town Division, whose wife was shot and injured during a drive-by shooting a few weeks ago.
Mayor of Kingston, Marie Atkins denounced the violent actions of the "lawless, marauding, unconscionable thugs", and applauded the church, police, politicians and residents of the war-torn communities who are working tirelessly to restore law and order there.
People's National Party (PNP) Councillor for the Allman Town Division, Victor Cummings, urged co-operation with the security forces to bring an end to the violence.
His colleague Angela Brown-Burke of the Norman Gardens Division said it was important to adopt an individual approach in attempting to bring about peace. She called on mothers, sisters and girlfriends to speak to the men in their homes involved in violence and try to influence them away from these acts. She said the violence was not politically initiated and called for an end to what she called a "political football game".
"I think it is clear for every single well-thinking Jamaican that this is not a violence that was initiated by any political party. I think by now that is clear to every well-thinking Jamaican," she said.
