THE EDITOR, Sir:SOMETIMES WHEN we break rules in order to take an easy way out of situations we often times end up putting our lives in danger.
I make reference to an incident which occurred quite recently. I was driving in one of those 'robot taxis' that run from Pembroke Hall to Downtown Kingston, of course picking up passengers en route down Waltham Park, Hagley Park and Spanish Town Roads.
Along the way, the taxis often make detours to either drop passengers off or to cut traffic which no one minds anyway. But this particular morning, the taxi turned off Waltham Park Road into a minor road and into a yard (where people live) through a huge metal gate. The gate was already opened and had a sign which read 'flammable gas'.
Once the taxi pulled into the yard, one of the 'attendants' jumped off the wall and starting filling the tank with gasolene. He went beside the house where they kept drums and buckets of gasolene. He took a bucket filled with gas, inserted one end of a hose and sucked from the other end. The taxi man seemed to be a regular customer and had no problems at all getting his gas by such means. But, I am sure he never stopped to think of the danger that he put the passengers into.
I don't know about the other people in the car, but I found it irresponsible and foolish to have done that. I was quite frightened even though to him it just meant getting gasolene at a cheaper cost, no big thing.
I guess this is one of the 'illegal gas stations' that have not been discovered by the relevant authorities.
I am, etc.,
FRIGHTENED PASSENGER
