Million-dollar bail for MoBay murder accused

WESTERN BUREAU:

A MONTEGO Bay auto body worker accused of the shooting death of a friend was offered bail in the sum of $1 million and his case committed to the next sitting of the Circuit Court in September.

Ansel Mellish, a 23-year-old duco man of Glendevon in Montego Bay, was offered bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's court on Monday.

Resident Magistrate Paulette Williams in granting bail told the court that under normal circumstances she would not entertain the bail application by attorney-at-law Ronald Parris. Mellish's case, she said, fell into what she considered extraordinary circumstances. She, however, did not say what the circumstances were.

Mellish, the father of one child and whose girlfriend is pregnant, is accused of the shooting death of Everton Willie in the Birch Hill area of Glendevon at 12:30 a.m. on March 4.

In his application for bail, Mr. Parris said that the evidence given by the lone witness for the crown had raised doubts. He said the distance the witness testified to have been from the shooting site would have made it difficult for a proper identification.

He said there were also differences concerning the number of shots that were supposed to have been fired. Forensic evidence showed that Willie had received two shots while the witness was said to have heard only one shot.

Mellish will have to report to the Montego Bay police three times a week, Monday, Thursday and Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
