Liguanea Sewerage Project enters second phase

IT WAS originally expected to run for ten weeks, but the National Water Commission announced Thursday that the major portion of phase one of the Liguanea Sewerage Project is expected to be completed this weekend.

However, the entire phase which was implemented May 14 is expected to run for another two or so weeks said a statement quoting project manager, Milton Dennis.

In preparation, a new traffic diversion route is to be effected as of Sunday.

West Indies Home Contractors (WIHCON) has been contracted to lay the sewer main and laterals from Matilda's Corner to Mona Road at its intersection with Bamboo Avenue. Construction activity is concentrated mainly on the right heading up into Liguanea, where the sewer main is being laid, but the construction crew has had to cross the road for some of the lateral connections.

Traffic heading into Liguanea from Old Hope Road often backs up to Munroe Road, but despite the slowdown, the vehicles, assisted by traffic markings, continue to move steadily.

The major inconvenience under the project has been to businesses fronting the main construction area, but WIHCON has attempted to minimise it by allowing for vehicular and pedestrian access to the properties.

In the second phase of the traffic plan, Mona Road to Bamboo Avenue heading south towards Wellington Drive will be one-way. Wellington Drive between Bamboo Avenue and Munroe Road heading towards Munroe Road will also be one-way. Two-way traffic will flow on Munroe Road.

The $30 million sewerage works are scheduled for five months, but NWC had said at the project's outset that it was likely to be completed before the deadline.
