Birth files reveal cases of deaths -Health Ministry

THE MINISTRY of Health yesterday reiterated its authority and responsibility to inspect records of institutions registered under the Nursing Homes Registration Act.

The Ministry also noted that it had issued copies of most of the medical records requested by patients booked at Labour of Love during the course of the week.

The Ministry was reacting to the latest developments surrounding its controversial closure of the Labour of Love Birth Centre in Kingston a week ago.

According to Ministry officials, 110 requests had been made since Monday, with 90 of them being issued by 4 p.m. yesterday. The release also said that the files were taken to facilitate proper transferral to patients' new health care providers, and to examine allegations of high morbidity and mortality at Labour of Love.

"On one occasion, Ministry personnel discovered that some client files were being kept seperately from other files. Examination of these files revealed cases of deaths along with other serious injuries," Ministry officials charged. "The Ministry therefore had strong reason to believe that Labour of Love was concealing certain problem files from its representatives when inspection visits were carried out."
