Waterford retain title

WATERFORD continued their dominance at the Primary level when they retained their title at the three-day Swizzle sponsored INSPORTS Primary Track and Field Championships, which ended at the National Stadium on Saturday.

The Portmore school, which was winning the Championships for the seventh consecutive year, amassed 197.67 points as the much-improved St. Benedicts (187) and St. Catherine (158) had to settle for second and third. Rounding off the top 10 were Clan Carthy 114, Mona 102, Naggos Head 101.67, Lawrence Tavern 99, Spanish Town 89.67, St. Richards 71 and Tarrant 68.67.

While Waterford's boy's team, with 124.67 points, topped their section, it was the outstanding performance of the St. Benedicts girls that stood out as out of their overall total of 187, their girls totalled 154 points to be the top girl's team.

It was close going for the entire three days and the outcome of the Championships came down to the final event, the boy's 4x400 metres Open final.

Going into that event, the Portmore team had a four-point lead over their east Kingston rivals. However, the Waterford team made their intention clear from the opening leg that they would not relinquish their title as Class II champion boy, Rodrick Tennant, ran a cracking leg to put his team in the lead. The St. Benedicts lead-off runner made a poor start as he handed over the baton way behind in last position and with that his team's hope of topping the Championships. Waterford eventually finished second, while St. Benedicts settled for seventh.

There were some very exciting battles throughout the Championships with the Class I Girls leading the way.

Following their keen rivalry the previous week at the Blue Cross JTA meet, it St. Catherine Primary's Sasha Gaye Cunningham and Ruthann Watson of St. Benedicts put in a repeat performance to end joint champion Class I athlete. They were bang in form as it took a photo finish to decide the outcome of their events. Cunningham took the 100 metres in 12.52 seconds ahead of Watson in 12.53 seconds. However in the 200 metres, Watson reversed the placing as she won in 26.38 seconds, ahead of Cunningham in 26.43.

There were two double winners in the girls section as Spanish Town Primary Peta Gaye Hamilton took the Class I 400 metres event and the 800 metres Open while Tasheca Sinclair of St. Benedicts took the Class 11 sprint double. Hamilton won the 400 metres with a time of 61.84 seconds and the 800 metres in 2:30.19 seconds. Sinclair posted 13.76 and 21.71 seconds for the 100 and 150 metres.

In Class 11 Excelsior's Monique Kelly and Rousseau's Tarika Williams were joint champions with 16 points each. Kelly captured the 100 metres in 12.99 seconds, while finishing second in the 300 metres in 45.18 seconds.
