Delinquent companies land in court

FORTY COMPANIES and individuals owing some $5 million in taxes, were last week hauled before the St. Catherine Resident Magistrate's Court, Spanish Town, for non-payment of statutory deductions to government.

The payments which should have been paid over, included General Consumption Tax (GCT), PAYE income tax, Human Employment and Resource Training programme (HEART), company taxes and education.

Among the companies taken before the court were Family Pride Mini-Mart, Spanish Town, which owes $1.2 million in GCT arrears since 1995, and Better Meats, Beckford Street, Spanish Town, which owes $89,000 in HEART taxes from 1993 to 1997.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of Sewell Barton of Barton's Shell service station for his failure to attend court. The court was told that Mr. Barton owes $300,000 in HEART returns from 1993 to 2000.
