Police launch sting on illegal bus, taxi

SPANISH TOWN:

SIXTY-FOUR ILLEGAL taxis and buses were ceased by the Spanish Town police for operating contrary to their road licences. This is as a result of a drive started last week by the police and traffic authority inspectors.

Inspector Radcliffe Lewis, who heads the team, told The Gleaner in an interview on Tuesday May 22 that the drive was as a result of the indiscipline of drivers on the road who, he said, drive recklessly and carelessly overtake other vehicles.

"Enough is enough and the police have stepped in to protect the Jamaican people" he said. However, he admitted that meanwhile, commuters are now left stranded. "We are asking that the Jamaican Urban Transport Corporation (JUTC) schedule buses to accommodate the passengers," he said.

He observed that when the buses are needed most, they are seen parked in the Spanish Town bus terminus, "while the passengers are out on the road suffering". Inspector Lewis said the drive will continue for the next three months.
