No greener pasture

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ that teachers are being recruited for work in the New York City public school system when the next academic year starts in September. I noted with interest one lady's comment. To paraphrase - she was tired of working in overcrowded classrooms, and being underpaid. She's in for a big surprise!

The New York City public school system is notorious for their overcrowded classrooms, but that will be the least of her, and others' problems. I don't know what they are being told at recruitment, but I hope they are ready to be serious disciplinarians and know how to do so without bumping heads with the legal system.

Please people, do a lot of homework before signing on. There are good kids in public schools, and then there are the others. The money might be good, but if you take the jobs do so for the love of teaching and/or advancement, otherwise, you might not stay.

I am, etc.,

CAROL HAMILTON
