American film/music stars touch down in JA

By Janet Silvera, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

RHYTHM AND Blues superstar Freddie Jackson, arrived in the island yesterday for the memorial weekend show dubbed 'Jamming in Jamaica'.

The artiste responsible for the songs Rock With Me Tonight and You Are My Lady is just the icing on a well-decorated cake topped with goodies for Negril. In truth, he is the precursor to a list of celebrities expected to grace the seven miles beach resort within the next two months.

Next week, the hip-hop and soul diva Mary J. Blige is slated to meet here with executives of MCA/Universal records at Swept Away Negril. At this same meeting several top DJ's from all over the United States will be in attendance.

Award-winning author Terry McMillan plans to woo a number of guests at a show called 'Get Your Groove Back at....Grand Lido Negril' from July 16-22.

Bill Walker of Wavz Negril has been in conversation with the stars of the show How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Walker told Showbiz he is trying to get Angella Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg and Taye Diggs to attend the week of activities planned by the hotel.

"Angella Bassett is filming the Martin Luther King mini- series, so her support in this venture is dependent on her schedule. However, they are all interested in coming, but it is dependent on what production they are working on," he said.
