The facts on cellular roaming

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with great interest that I read Mr. Twomey's article about C&W's efforts to introduce cellular 'roaming' to Jamaica. It is a project that is long overdue, and seems to have been put on the burner now because of the competition that they will be facing.

There is a statement that he made that is totally erroneous and I think he might have floated it so that it becomes a part of the psyche, and bring no objection at implementation. He stated that cellular calls from the USA to Jamaica now cost between US$2-US$4.

This is not true. I call Jamaica regularly from New York on my cell phone, and I pay US$1.10 per minute. I do not have any special plans that offer me a reduced rate. I can present copies of my bills to substantiate this fact.

I am just passing this on to the Jamaican public that they will not be fooled by Cable & Wireless into believing that cellular roaming calls are excessively expensive, so they should be asked to pay through the nose for the privilege.

I am etc.,
