THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE DEMONSTRATION of patriotic duty, sense of commitment, and heroism by employees of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited in response to Wednesday morning's fire at the JUTC Spanish Town Depot, highlights another side of the Jamaican workers which we are sometimes quick to ignore.
The JUTC employees, like Petrojam employees some months ago, defied danger and placed their own lives at risk in an effort to save lives, and property.
The accounts of how female employees, who have never driven vehicles before, were able to drive even the articulated buses to safety; or the group of men and women who physically moved heavy equipment, and vehicles out of the line of the fire, was a most commendable display of working class sincerity and loyalty.
Significantly enough, the efforts of the JUTC workers took place in the midst of our celebration of Labour Day, and represent an epic testament to the struggles of the Jamaican workers for a prosperous and progressive society.
I pay tribute to the JUTC employees for their spirit, tenacity, courage, patriotism and sense of loyalty for which, as a country, we should be all proud.
