Hewitt gets licence

SPORTS JOURNALIST Evon Hewitt has taken up the challenge of promoting boxing in Jamaica.

Hewitt, the Sports Editor of Ocho Rios-based radio station, IRIE FM, was recently granted a promoter's licence by the Jamaica Boxing Board.

He has plans to stage his first professional fight card on May 14 at Jamaica Grande. An official an-nouncement will be made at a press conference tomorrow evening at 7:00 in the Jamaica Grande conference room.

"Not much has been happening in the sport, especially on the north coast. We plan to make boxing a consistent and ongoing thing," Hewitt said yesterday,

"I'm going to be working closely with the board and all others involved in this new thrust in the northern area. We will be trying to uncover new talent while keeping the current ones in training, and later on maybe look overseas," he said.

Late last year, the Northern Area Boxing Asso-ciation was formed. There is only one boxing gym operating in St Ann - Pals - by former trainer and Jamaica representative Frank Orrett. It was officially opened last October in Meditation Heights, Brown's Town
