yl: Music - Bege

Michael Sloley/ Staff Photgrapher

Twenty-one-year-old Clayon 'Bege' Doyle has been interested in music since he wasa little boy.

"When I was younger, I spent a lot of time around my cousin who is a sound selector so I was exposed to a wide selection of music," he said.

His cousin, 'Bad Ras' of the City Rock Disco, introduced him to 'Little Hero' who did the single 'God alone'.

This further inspired him to become a DJ. In 1996, sometime after moving to Kingston from Spanish Town, he met rapper Owtlaw Ace. They joined forces to form the Topp Dawg Clan, a group combining dancehall and hip-hop. A year later he recorded his first single, 'Keep on rising', with Ace featuring Leba for Sly and Robbie of the Taxi-Gang.

To date, he's been involved in more than eight tracks with group member Ace, featuring other Taxi Artistes such as Getaway, Daytime, Superstar, and Competition. Some of the songs have done well locally and overseas. 'Daytime' entered the RJR top 30 reggae charts and 'Getaway' was the first dancehall song to be played on a R&B radio station in Philadelphia.

This multi-talented artiste is now living in Soviet, Seaview Gardens and working on future projects.

"Right now I'm waiting for my producers to release Innocent Kru's album so I can continue my work," he said.

The DJ's calm observing attitude has allowed him to learn a great deal about the business and improve his skill.

Producers won't have to worry about the future of dancehall with talent like this around.
