MORE and more higglers are turning to the selling of weed at stage shows because there is a bigger market for that. As a result one can find less snacks which are sold outside the venue, THE STAR understands.
The selling of weed or "high grade" as it is called by higglers is not only easy to handle but fetches a good price from foreigners especially.
Heavy D a show promoter told THE STAR that dancehall music keeps encouraging the smoking of weed.
"What has increased is the number of artistes smoking this high-grade. So if there are forty artistes on a show one can bet at least 35 of these want weed to smoke."
Heavy D explains that the cost of weed is usually more than triple for foreigners and that they also smoke it heavily.
Brenda Hamilton, manager of Xlarge, feels the selling of weed has nothing to do with entertainers. There are a lot of entertainers who do not smoke weed.
"I think is the easy access selling weed and the fact that the police don't even bother to pay these vendors any mind when they are seen."
When interviewed, higglers who sell weed told THE STAR it is usually more profitable selling the drug because the demand is so high.
According to one higgler, he and many of his friends stopped selling bag-juice and biscuits because dancehall patrons want something more "to give them the vibes."
Another higgler said she makes more money now that she has been selling weed. She said she is able to make a profit of $5,000 at one stage show.
Higglers sell weed for between $50 a bag to $1000, depending on the customers.
