COMMUNICATIONS giants Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited will pump $9.3 million in cash and services into local football over the next eight months.
The first installment of $2,080,000 was handed over at a press conference hosted by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) at its St Lucia Crescent headquarters yesterday. In making the presenation Cable & Wireless also announced its adoption of Reggae Boy Andy Williams.
Speaking on behalf of the company, acting president Gary Barrow promised the JFF additional money, upon the senior team's qualification for the final phase of the 2002 World Cup.
The funding combines cash and services which include free pre-activitated cellular phones and phone cards for both players and management.
As part of the package, Cable & Wireless will undertake the cost of printing tickets for each home game which will amount to approximately $700,000 and donate one dollar from the sale of each Jamaica-Link-up calling card and host a Reggae Boyz web-site.
JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, lauded the company for its supprt of local football.
"I am happy that Cable & Wireless are back on board and I thank them for their invaluable support of this programme. They have demonstrated yet again how to keep the communication line running. This sponsorship is very, very significant, because without such support football cannot go forward."
