Burrell JAMAICA Football Federation (JFF) president, Captain Horace Burrell, has requested a meeting with Tourism and Sports Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Minister of National Security and Justice K.D. Knight to address the problem of overcrowding and other security matters at the National Stadium.
"A football game has now taken on a new meaning. It is now a major national event so it is therefore my view that the government has a responsibility to ensure that everything goes well," Burrell said at a press conference yesterday to announce Cable & Wireless' new funding of local football.
"The main aim of the meeting, Burrell said, is to formulate a plan which will ensure that patrons will not be subjected to suffering and harassment.
"Many security measures are going to be implemented. I won't say what those security measures are right now as I have not yet met with the relevant persons. We want to ensure that for the remaining games, we have proper security in place to prevent persons from scaling the walls and harassing fun-loving Jamaicans who turn out to enjoy the game."
The JFF president said games are shown live in many parts of the world and they wanted to present a good image of Jamaica.
The request for a meeting with the ministers of government comes in the wake of last month's killing of a chain-grabber shortly after Jamaica's World Cup qualifying football game against Trinidad and Tobago at the stadium. The man was killed by an off-duty police officer.
