SOUTH Africa finished with a 74-run advantage in their second innings on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies, but West Indies pacer Courtney Walsh stole the show by becoming the first bowler to take 500 wickets in Test history.
Walsh, 38, snared the wickets of South African opener Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis in the space of three balls in mid-afternoon to move from 498 to 500. Kirsten was caught behind sparring outside off stump while Kallis was adjudged leg before by ICC umpire Darrell Hair despite getting an obvious inside edge.
At close, South Africa were 130 for two in their second innings, an advantage of 74 runs. After Walsh's breakthroughs, Herschelle Gibbs and Daryll Cullinan rebuilt the visitors' innings in an undefeated third wicket stand of 92. Gibbs hit nine fours in an unbeaten 57 off 182 deliveries, his second half century of the series. Cullinan, a first innings century-maker, was 41 not out off 106 balls with two fours.
Earlier in the day, the West Indies, resuming from 250 for seven, were bowled out for 342 thanks to a magnificent, unbeaten 93 from wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs.
The 33-year-old from Antigua added a record 71 for the ninth wicket with Mervyn Dillon after the South African captain Shaun Pollock grabbed the wicket of Dinanath Ramnarine in the day's first over.
The pair almost batted through the opening session but Dillon was bowled by Makhaya Ntini in the last over before lunch for a valuable 21 off 87 balls in just under two hours.
The stand was the highest for the ninth wicket in the eight Tests between the teams, beating the 66 between South Africans Pat Symcox and Allan Donald in Port Elizabeth in 1998-1999.
Jacobs returned after the break on 72 and upped the tempo after being joined by last man Walsh.
But in seeking to retain the strike, Jacobs was involved in a mix-up with Walsh and the lanky fast bowler was run out for his 42nd duck, also a world record.
The five-day match continues today.
