The Romans' strong feelings continue

WONDERFUL MARRIAGE: Conrad and Elaine Roman, celebrating 27 years of marriage. - Ian Allen

RESPECTFUL, honest, caring, sensitive, are just some of the words that can be used to describe the relationship shared between Conrad and Elaine Romans from Black River, St. Elizabeth.

Having shared these feelings, it is no surprise that the couple has enjoyed 27 years of marriage and there seems to be no end in sight.

And after almost three decades of being with each other the Romans say their feelings are just as strong as when they first fell in love.

"If I get the chance to do it over I would marry her again and again, and again," Conrad declares. "She is a complete package, a lovely wife, wonderful mother, she lives a balanced life and she has stability."

Elaine was equally nice about her main squeeze. "I have married a man you can take at his word. He plans and ensures his family is catered for and calculates every move," she said.

The couple met while Conrad was living in Darliston, Westmoreland, and working as a pre-trained teacher at a school there. Elaine had just come to work at the post office in the community. Upon seeing each other it was literally love at first sight.

"She pleased the eyes and I approached her and started a conversation," Conrad recal-led.

From there they started seeing each other and even though their jobs caused them to be at different sections of the island they kept in touch regularly.

After enduring three years in a long-distance relationship, Conrad and Elaine finally decided the time was right to tie the knot.

They exchanged "I Do's" at the Carmel Moravian Church (on the St. Elizabeth/West-moreland border), on December 29, 1973.

They have three children, one boy and two girls. The son, who is married, is a chemical engineer working abroad. One of their daughters lives with them. They also have a granddaughter.

However, the Romans don't take all the credit for the success they have had at marriage. They give God his fair share of credit as well.

"It's a triangular relationship, my wife and myself are the base, and the Lord is in the centre," Conrad points out. "The family that prays together stays together. We communicate a lot. Teeth and tongue will meet and have met, but we have and will continue to make it through with the help of the Lord."

They advise people to take time to know their partners, as marriage is not an overnight thing.

They also advise that the Lord must be an essential and integral part of the relationship and they must be committed and want it to work.

"Never let the sun go down with your wrath. Settle all your problems before going to bed, never have a dispute before your children, settle it in the bedroom," said Conrad. "Ask the Lord for divine guidance and don't be too pre-occupied with other people's things."
