Garrick NEHEMIAH PERRY'S XI, batting a second time, had a lead of 197 runs at the end of the second day of the three-day trial match to select Jamaica's Busta Cup team at the Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday.
When bad light stopped play, Perry's XI were 146 for four with Orlando Baker 11 not out and allrounder Gareth Breese on three.
The good position on the second day was due largely to the batting of Leon Garrick who recorded an aggressive 63 which included nine fours and one six. He shared in an opening partnership of 109 with former West Indian representative Christopher Gayle who made 31 to follow up his first innings of 76.
Earlier Samuels' XI, who resumed on an overnight score of 49 for two, were cut down for a meagre 142 with extras top scoring with 26. Also making useful scores were Robert Samuels, 23, and Wayne Cuff who made 22. Four other players managed to reach double figures but could not get past the unlucky figure of 13.
Bulky fast bowler Denville McKenzie was the most successful bowler for Perry's XI collecting three wickets for 39 runs while Breese snared two for eight and captain Perry chipped in with two for 29.
When Perry's XI batted a second time, Garrick, who got back into the trial squad after being pardoned indiscretions by the Jamaica Cricket Association, batted like a man eager to convince all present of his worth. Besides Garrick and Gayle, another former West Indies representative, Ricardo Powell, scored 18 before heading to the pavilion.
