Imminent cash windfall for J'can performers

THE JAMAICA Performers Administration Society (JPAS) has finally been formed in response to the drive to collect millions of US dollars worth of performance rights owing to Jamaican performers world-wide.

"There is a minimum of US$15 million out there for performance rights for Jamaicans. So now we're formed, JPAS is making a joint bid with PASA France, and PASA USA to tap into the money. We've lost a lot of money for decades, because we only concentrated on performance fees and unit sales, but there is a separate performance rights fund out there we need to collect from," Tony Laing of the Intellectual Property Service Centre, said.

Once any Jamaican performer, including musicians and emcees, delivers a performance in a structured, commercially exploited activity, he is entitled to performance rights.
