SUPERMARKET chain, HI LO Food Stores, has appealed to members of the public to return as soon as possible canned soups under the "No Name" brand:
a) No Name Condensed Cream of Celery Soup,
b) No Name Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup,
c) No Name Condensed Vegetable Soup-Prepared with beef broth,
d) No Name Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup and
e) No Name Club Pack Condensed Soup.
This advisory follows a voluntary recall of four flavours from the soup's Canadian manufacturers, Les Produits Freddy Incorporated, which advised HI LO the soups represented a possible health risk because they may have been under-processed.
Beverley Miller, Deputy Group Director, Quality Assurance and Certification at the Jamaica Bureau of Standards, explained the health risks associated with the consumption of under-processed soups varied depending on the type of organisms which may be present in a product. Reactions to its consumption also vary, ranging from mild forms of vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pains, nausea, fever, headaches to more severe symptoms and death.
Canned soups usually fall into food category classified as low-acid canned foods. This meant they needed to be subjected to specific heat treatment called a scheduled heat process, which is arrived at by determining the proper temperature and length of time needed to sterilise the food container.
