Union blues

THE EDITOR, Madam:

UNITED ESTATES Limited would like you to correct a number of inaccuracies that appeared in an article in the Business Section of the Gleaner on Wednesday, November 8, 2000, entitled "Union Blues for United". They are as follows:-

1. In paragraph three (3) it is reported that the NWU's claim for wage increases was for 12 and 15 per cent in years one and two respectively. The Union's final position was in fact 25 per cent in year one and 20 per cent in year two.

2. It is also reported that the company refused to present its financial statements to the IDT. That is totally false, as a copy of the audited Profit & Loss Account for the years 1991 to 1999 were included in the company's brief. Four copies of the Brief were submitted to the IDT for use in the hearings, one of which was given to the NWU. Further financial information was also requested by the IDT and presented accordingly. For anyone to claim that the accounts of United Estates Limited were not presented is an attempt to misrepresent the facts.

I am etc.,

PETER MCCONNELL
