Squatter relocation woes

THE EDITOR, Madam:

NOT TOO long ago, I recall the outcry of residents in Hope Pastures opposing houses that were to be built and sold for $4m and upwards. The residents rejected this development citing several reasons and eventually alternative lands were identified after much debate.

Along the same vein, we the residents of Elletson Flats strongly oppose the government's planned relocation of the Mona Commons' squatters to lands adjoining the University of the West Indies. From all indications however, it would appear that the Minister, Mr. Colin Campbell is determined to proceed with the relocation despite the protest of residents emanating from concerns of crime, reduced property values among others, which Mr. Campbell cannot honestly dismiss as imaginary.

The question that begs to be answered is whether the rights of persons who have legally acquired their homes are subordinated to those of illegal squatters?

We urge Mr. Campbell to give due consideration to our concerns as we too are constituents and deserve to have our rights respected.

I am, etc.,

CONCERNED RESIDENT,

Elleston Flats.
