MANY times champion Cornwall College and second year entrant St. James High continued their relentless march towards the quarter-finals of the 2000 Pepsi/Sports plus daCosta Cup yesterday when they registered convincing 4-1 and 2-0 wins against Petersfield and Mannings respectively.
In the Group One game against Petersfield at Jarrett Park, Cornwall College moved to maximum six points from their two games when goals by Garnet Chisholm (2), Garrick Gordon and Dane Richards gave them a comfortable 4-1 win. The Cornwall College team registered a 2-0 win against Ferncourt in their first game.
"We only need a draw against Anchovy to advance now but come Saturday we will still be gunning for a win," said Dr. Dean Weatherley, the coach of the Cornwall College team.
"We cannot allow complacency to creep into our game so we will be taking Saturday's game quite serious."
St. James High, with a perfect record in Group Two, following yesterday's win and their impressive first round 3-0 blanking of Cedric Titus now look a safe bet to make the quarter-final round. For them to falter, they would have to lose by five clear goals against second place Frome (three points) in their game on Saturday.
Cornwall College dominated the early exchanges and took the lead in the 17th minute. On a mission down the middle, Gordon pounced on a cross before the goal and slotted home easily, making the half time score 1-0.
Cornwall College continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and went further ahead in the 53rd minute when Richards waltzed passed the Petersfield defence and fired easily out of the reach of goalkeeper Rohan Lewis, making it 2-0.
With Petersfield fighting back gamely, Cornwall College launched a spirited counter-attack from which substitute Orlando Coleman was fouled inside the penalty area in the 66th minute. Chisholm made no mistake from the penalty spot. However, four minute later, Petersfield got on the score sheet when a superb lob by O'Brian Forbes left Cornwall College's goalkeeper stranded for a 3-1 lead.
Before the Petersfield celebrations ended, Cornwall College regained their three-goal advantage in the 72nd minute. Chisholm worked his way through the defence and slotted in from close range.
