Did you know?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

This letter is for the Jamaican public at large.

Did you know

- that if you injure yourself at work, maybe from a fall in the office, etc. you can claim Employment Injury Benefit from N.I.S.?

- but if the fall is outside the gate of the premises, there is no benefit.

Did you know:

- that the claim must be submitted within ten days?

- if it is regarded as a late submission the benefit is disallowed - irrespective of the reason for it being sent in later then the bureaucracy's deadline.

Did you know:

- that the claim takes approximately 8-9 months to get a response from the N.I.S./Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Sports.

- and at this stage you are advised you submitted the claim late; you're too late!

Did you know:

- If you have an accident while at work, remember, even from your hospital bed, ask someone to:

- write up the report;

- to get your boss to verify it;

- to get the doctor to sign it;

- and get it into the N.I.S. office - quickly, quickly, quickly....then you may be the lucky one to receive the benefit to which I only recently learned we're entitled.

I am, etc.,

VICKY MAY
