THE EDITOR, Madam:
THE CONTROVERSY and uncertainty over Merlene Ottey's participation in the 100-metre event must lie squarely at the feet of the JAAA.
Against the background of inactivity caused from wrongful suspension and the potential and ability of Merlene to be competitive come Sydney, the JAAA lacked the foresight to make the necessary provisions before the race in the event she did not finish in the top three, hence the dilemma that follows. They could have offered her an automatic selection pending her progress before the trials.
As for those who argue about special treatment. Anyone who brings to the table a long, decorated and illustrious career as Merlene deserves special treatment.
Apart from taxes and death, I can't think of any facet of life where those that have excelled far beyond their peers have not been given preferential treatment at times. However, her statement about not competing unless it is the 100-metre individual, although made out of anger and frustration, is unfortunate.
I am etc.,
