Roman Catholics have strayed from genuine Christianity

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I AM writing in response to an article written by Peter Espeut which was in itself a response to another article.

Sir, I appreciate your tremendous attempt to narrow the interpretation of the declarations made recently by the Vatican, since it speaks eloquently of your patriotic allegiance. However, there are some things that I find very disconcerting.

Your statement: "This is the age of ecumenism, a time when different religions are seeking common ground" is very interesting. I tell you why. It is because an understanding of the prophetic writings of Revelation indicates that such will happen at the close of the age.

They might not necessarily be right in their purpose and actions but the Bible indicates that such would take place. To preach with understanding of Bible prophecy is not anti-Catholic propaganda.

Sir, I also have concerns about the assertions about this document and the confidence with which you defend it. Yes the document asserts that the Church founded by Christ still exists today, through the historical continuity, the 'Apostolic Succession' from Peter to John Paul II. But is this really true?

How can the Church that Jesus founded have fundamental differences with the practices of Jesus? How can the Church that profess that it is following so closely the pattern set by Christ deviate so much from the teachings of Christ? Christ prayed directly to the Father in heaven and stated that He is the only mediator between man and God.

Christ worshipped as His custom was on the Sabbath. Christ was baptised in much water by immersion. How could this be? It appears to me that in truth the Church founded by Christ continues to exist fully today not as you suggest "only in the Catholic Church" but as Relations 12:17, the Church that "keeps the commandments of God and has the testimonies of Jesus Christ".

The Roman Catholic Church is a marvellous church and has several wonderful people in it but it my opinion that this church has inserted its own traditions into Christendom that it has even affected and even warped the minds of many truth-
searching individuals.

I am etc.,
