Muslim leader comes

MEMBERS OF the Muslim community in Jamaica, said to number some 4,000, are looking forward to the visit this weekend of the spiritual leader of their faith.

He is His Excellency Amir Ul-Hind Hazarat Sheik Mawlana Syed Asad Al-Madani Sb, the 41st descendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammed and the highest authority in the Islamic religion.

Hazarat Asad Al-Madani, from the holy city of Medina, Saudi Arabia, is to visit Jamaica on Saturday, September 2, departing on Monday, September 4, according to Imam Muhammed Shafiqul Isalm, of Masjid-as-Saalam, the Muslim mosque at 1 Leichester Avenue, Kingston 8, off Red Hills Road and Whitehall Avenue.

The 75-year-old Sheikh, who is spiritual guide of, and mentor to, the Government of Saudi Arabia, is nearing the end of a multi-country visit which has included the United States, and Canada. He will be putting in a day-long public appearance in Jamaica at the request of the local Muslim community.

A religious public gathering has been arranged for the Islamic holy man for tomorrow at 11 a.m., on the grounds of the mosque at 1 Leichester Avenue, where he will deliver a short address.

Imam Islam said the Sheikh spends his time between Deoband, Uttar Pradesh State, India and Madina, South Africa and had been a mentor to former Indian Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

"We are looking forward to his visit", Imam Islam told The Gleaner.
