Finding solutions to crime

THE EDITOR, Madam:

RECENTLY A number of people have been calling for the removal of Mr. K.D. Knight because of their perception that he has failed to stem the increasing crime wave.

I recall similar calls were made when the West Indies

cricket team was performing below par, then the calls were for the removal of the various captains. The change of captains did not address the intrinsic flaw in the team which in my opinion is poor talent and failure of some of the players to work harder at their game.

The same analogy can be applied to the crime rate.

What is intrinsically wrong? Is it poor family life? Is it poverty? Is it inadequate education? It could be all of the above or none of the above.

I have listened to many well meaning individuals

postulating various theories as to the causes but I have not heard any tangible suggestions towards solutions.

We need to find worthwhile employment for people especially our young people. We also need to respect and to love each other. Too many of us are too quick to assert our ego, men are trying to be superior to women and women are trying to belittle men while the children are confused.

If K. D. Knight is replaced with Father Ho Lung or the

Pope or Desmond Tutu the crime rate will not improve

because the reason is elsewhere to be found.

I am etc.,
