Mr. and Miss SuperClubs contest impresses

Janet Silvera, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

CUBAN MEN upstaged their Jamaican counterparts, while the Jamaican females held their own in the first leg of the Mr. and Miss SuperClub's talent competition at Hedonism II, recently.

Innovativeness, originality, stage presentation and showmanship were the order of the night's proceedings. Creative minds were evidently at work from the type of costumes which contestants wore.

The choreography of the show was superb and the contestants went over and beyond to win the scores of the judges and the audience.

From the offset of the evening's entertainment when the competitors graced the stage in creatively wrapped white sheets, dancing to Sergio Mendez Magalena a track from Vanessa Williams' Dance With Me, the audience knew the night would be unforgettable. A mixture of Cuban, Latin and African beats permeated the atmosphere.

Of the 23 who competed, several are worthy of mention. They included Marie Young of Hedonism II who gave an excellent performance, with a 'hedonistic' climax. She was dressed in a black leather bondage outfit, see-through top, carrying a whip and handcuffs. On the other hand, Arlene Anderson, of the Bahamas, brought the Spirit of the Lord from a country known for its religious beliefs.

She depicted the magnificence of God's creation by using palm trees, flowers and sheets. Her act ended with fireworks, a mark of God's finished product, the Earth.

Cuban Maria Victoria Martinez, performed as a sex goddess, through dance and mime, wearing a black lace see-through outfit.

Others who were outstanding included Donabeth Laylor, of Breezes Montego Bay; Donald Mitchell, Hedonism III; Tamara Finlayson, Grand Lido Negril; Daimaris Alonso, Jibacoa, Cuba; George Rerrie, Hedonism II and Carlos Llerandis, also of Cuba.

Cabaret performer, Romeo Jae, thrilled the women with his titillating, short and spicy performance during the break.

Come Tuesday, September 5, the contestants will again meet at the Trelawny Beach and Fun Resort where six finalists will be chosen. The winner is expected to take home US$1,000 in prize money, a cruise and a course in Hotel Management.
