That special luncheon

President of the Rotary Club of Kingston, Major General Robert Neish (right) greets 'Miss Jamaica World' contestant, Tracy-Ann Dawkins, as other contestants Pasha Campbell (left); Melaine Owens (centre) and Ayisha Richards look on. They were guests of the club at a luncheon at, Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

THE VENUE: The Port Antonio Suite, Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.

Occasion: A special weekly luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Kingston to meet contestants in the Miss Jamaica World 2000 beauty pageant.

Crowd: A mix of Rotarians from home and abroad, chaperone and representatives of Spartan Health Club, promoters of the contest, 20 beauties and media personnel.

Beverage: Coffee and tea served after lunch and a selection of sodas and fruit punch at the bar prior to the formalities.

Food: Fried chicken with French fries and sauteed vegetables, with cheese cake for afters.

Dress: Men in business suits and the contestants in short close-fitting dresses and trendy suits with formal sandals.

Guest speakers: Miss Guardian Life Insurance Brokers Co., Nicole Brown; Miss Suave, Ayisha Richards and Miss Twin Gates Shopping Centre, Marsh Ann Hag, proving that some women are blessed with beauty and brain.

What the speaker said: They spoke about the obvious problem of crime and violence in Jamaica, a subject of every tongue these days. They called for unity in the fight against crime, promising to play their part.

The vibe: Jokes, cheap shots at fellow Rotarians, while the club members claimed they were on their best behaviour because they had guests.

Wrap up time: About 2:00 p.m. as most had to return to work.
