JUST OVER $5 million provided through the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) is being spent building a new classroom block at the Seaforth Primary School in St. Thomas.
Under the terms of the contract the school community is to provide $350,000 or 5% of the overall cost in cash or kind. However, the school's community has already spent some $600,000 on initial construction. At the signing it was announced that construction was to be completed within five months.
According to administrative manager of finance in the Jamaica Social Investment Fund, Faith Graham, so far the JSIF has invested $341 million in education, having approved 74 contracts to up-grade, expand and equip Basic, Primary and All-Age schools across the island. She said this has provided for the construction of 90 classrooms.
Speaking specifically of the work to be done at Seaforth Primary, Ms. Graham said three classrooms were to be built to ease overcrowding.
