Russell marches on in ITF tournament

TOP SEEDED Jamaican Ryan Russell cruised into the third round of the Cable and Wireless International Federation (ITF) Junior Tennis tournament at the Liguanea Club yesterday.

Russell, who was given a bye to the second round, easily dismissed Omar Alexander of the United States 6-1, 6-0.

Third seed Rahul Rajkthewa of India beat Jamaica's Wayne Lawrence 6-2, 6-2 and Kevron Bennett, also of Jamaica and seeded fifth, made light work of Clifford Giel of Aruba 6-0, 6-3.

In other Boys 18 results, No. 12 seed Jonathan Hart of Trinidad whipped Adam Bensimhon of the US 6-1, 6-0, 16th seed Rayne Russell of Jamaica lost a bruising battle 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Barbadian Christopher Williams and Marc Philpotts of Jamaica lost to the United States' Omar Alexander 6-0, 6-4.

Local boy Damion Johnson got by Ayo Burgess of Barbados 6-2, 7-5, Gary Galt of Trinidad and Tobago dismissed Russell Moseley 6-1, 6-2, Ryan Moseley, brother of Russell, also lost 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to Wayne Lawrence of Jamaica.

Devon McCarthy of Bermuda beat Jordon Von Strolley 6-0, 6-2, Jose Luis Muguruza of Aruba squeezed past Christopher Spencer of the US 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, Damar Johnson beat fellow Jamaican Mario Brown 6-1, 6-1.

In the Girls 18 division, fourth seeded Nikkita Fountain of the Bahamas advanced to the third round by beating Jamaican Esther Williams 6-2, 6-3.

In other girls action, Carla Pallares of the US eased past Jamaican Alexis Panton 6-0, 6-2, Sonia Ramcharan of Jamaica beat Kimberley Peterson of Aruba 6-1, 6-3, Monisha Ghia of the US whipped Jamaican Aarti Mantani 6-0, 6-0 and Lisa Fung KeeFung of Trinidad and Tobago beat Joselle Dunn of Barbados 6-3, 6-0.
