Over the last two weeks we have been studying the Book of Philippians. This book was occasioned by the Philippian Christians taking the time to care for Paul and his ministry to the extent that they were willing to invest financially in his ministry. This kindness helped Paul to realise that these Christians had an unusual joy. Even when Paul was in prison he was still able to give thanks to God for every memory of the Philippian Christians, who by then had apparently become his friends. As we continue our study, we will reflect on the substance of Paul's prayer as highlighted in Philippians 1:; 9-11.
Abound in Love
Paul, as he expressed his thankfulness for their fellowship with him, clearly stated that his affection for them was one with the tenderness and love of Christ (verse 8). He took the time to pray for them because he knew that the greatest service one can give to someone is to pray for him/her. Let us never forget that prayer is also the best way to elevate and safeguard friendship. Paul had no need to pray that the Philippians will have love for one another and for him because he knew by experience that such love was undoubtedly already in existence. Paul however saw the need to pray that such love will grow and mature in knowledge.
Able to Discern
Paul had a desire to see the Christians at Philippi being "able to discern what is best". He did not fuss with them about their apparent inability to discern what is best but he took it to God in prayer. Very often when we see areas that need improvement in people's lives and our first response is to confront. There is a place to spend time in prayer asking the Lord to build in people's lives the ability to discern before we confront or even instead of confronting. You and I are required to approve and practice that which is ethically and morally correct. God's desire is that we will lives that are blameless and pure before him.
Abide in Righteousness
Paul prayed that the Christians at Philippi be 'filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ'. Paul was not satisfied that the Christians should have "knowledge" only but that this knowledge should affect their lifestyle. In a society where there are no fixed moral standards, where right and wrong are mere relative terms. Paul insisted that we should not be creatures of our circumstances nor should we to be ruled by impulse and desires. God requires that we live our lives in keeping with his standards - to His glory and praise!
Prayer
Dear God, help me to grow in love. Please help me to be able to discern Your will and way everyday. May my lifestyle reflect your standards.
