County Champs bowls off

THE opening round of the fourth Jamaica County Championships begins today with the playing of three games.

Defending champions Lucas, the only club team to have participated in all four championships, travel to St. Elizabeth to take on Middlesex at Port Esquivel.

Lucas, led by former Jamaica wicketkeeper Andre Coley, will depend on the allround efforts of veteran national player Delroy Morgan, Kevin Riley and Omar Burke to overpower a strong Middlesex aggregation led by Fredrick Redwood which includes Leon Garrick, West Indies player Ricardo Powell, who has just recently returned from England after the conclusion of the triangular series, Matthew Sinclair and Howard Harris.

Cornwall, boasting the services of Carl Wright, Kamal Dennis and Sheldon Gordon host Surrey A with Tamar Lambert, Oneil Richards and Audley Sanson at Alpart.

Surrey B, captained by Nehemiah Perry, will play Rothman's All-island cricket champions Melbourne at Kensington Park. Melbourne have been strengthened by the inclusion of two overseas-based players, Winston Reid from Barbados and Colin Stuart of Guyana.

The teams: Middlesex-Fredrick Redwood (captain), Leon Garrick, Dervin Morand, Ricardo Powell, Colin Buchanan, Brenton Beckford, Sadique Brown, Howard Harris, Glenmore Hall, Orlando Baker, Lascelles Davis, Kevin Peart, Martina Mills and Matthew Sinclair.
